Dal chaawal
Ingredients:
  • Yellow moong dal(dhotal dal) 2 handfull of this will suffice for 3 persons
  • Tomatoes 2
  • Green chillies 3
  • Ginger
  • Curry leaves 6-8
  • Cummin seeds 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil 1 tbsp for tempering
  • Cooked white rice as per requirement

 

Method:
  • Soak dal for atleast half hour,wash it 5-6 times
  • In pressure cooker,mix dal,chopped tomatoes,greenchillies and ginger,salt,turmeric powder and two cups of water
  • Close the lid of cooker and wait for 2 whistles
    (NOTE Many prefer this dal to be cooked in handi ,or an open vessel,in that case follow same method except that more water should be added)
  • Whisk the dal when cooked
  • Now take some oil for tempering,heat it and add curry leaves and cummin seeds ,and allow it to splutter
  • Add this seasoning to the dal ,mix it ,adjust it consistency by adding water and simmer it for few min ,or if using pressure cooker, wait for one whistle
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with plain white rice

Recepie for making ferment for making doli a type of poori? The trick lies in making the ferment for making the dough. 7 spices - cloves, cinnamon, big cardamom, saunf, chana dal, poppy seeds and one more - are used to making the ferment with water. It is left undisturbed for more than 24 hours which is used in making the dough which is again allowed to stand and raise and then pooris are made by stuffing boiled yellow dal flattening on hand and and deep fried.
